Project

Modern house extension and interior garden / reading retreat, West Bromwich, Sandwell

Client: Private family

Completion: Winter 2020

Build cost: £33,854

The clients required an extension to provide a sun lounge and retreat, in which to enjoy reading whilst taking in their beautiful garden views and the sun. We designed and specified a contemporary, bright and airy extension with a high performance fabric to be energy efficient and reduce heat loss. By optimising glazing to the south facing extension, the couple benefits from generous light and solar heat gain, in turn reducing lighting and heating bills.

The extension takes design cues from the existing house such as decorative brickwork, whilst adding contemporary design such as bi-fold doors and a tall vertical window to frame outside views. The existing house lounge transitions into the newly extended sun lounge room, which in turn flows into the sensory garden with its feature cascading terraces. A large bi-fold door opening, vertical window and rooflights encourage the clients to take advantage of the outdoor views, and connect the inside with the garden to provide a sense of being outdoors and wellbeing.

A virtual building model allowed the client to visualise the design and make an informed decision on every key part of the design and specification to achieve exactly what they wanted. This comprehensive level of drawn and modelled communication permitted the client to extract maximum value for their budget.

The detailed model and drawings also allows contractors to tender more accurately for the project providing the client with further value.
